Staff from almost all of Gateshead's Secondary schools took part in a training workshop last week, where they learnt how to register pupils onto the Concept2 website and take part in the online National Schools League.

The league is a nationwide Indoor Rowing tournament open to all schools. Last season, over 27000 participants in just under 3000 teams competed across the country. Upon registration, each school can enter as many teams as they like from any year group. Teams can consist of either 4 or 8 member, with different challenges being set each month. The key benefits of participating in the league are:

  • Proof of pupil participation across the year

Following the submission date of each challenge, all school results will be uploaded and used to formulate a Gateshead only League. Battle it out over the course of the year to become the top school in Gateshead!

Thumbnail image for IMG_5832 EDIT.jpg

Two students have recently been selected to be Young Ambassadors for Gateshead in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.  Amy Dobson and Lee Whitfield from St Thomas More Catholic School in Blaydon have been selected to represent the Borough based on their sporting/sports leadership abilities.

Amy and Lee will be acting as role models thoughout the Borough and will be working towards the following programme aims:

  • Increase participation
  • Promote healthy and active lifestyles
  • Live out and promote the Olympic & Paralympic ideals

They will be supoprted by last year's Young Ambassadors from Whickham School & Sports College (Jamie Leech & Michael Bracchi) who have now moved into a 'Mentor Ambassador' role.

The fact that this is the 2nd time in just 3 years that the successful applicants for this role have come from St Thomas More School, clearly demonstrates the School's commitment to promoting sport & physical activity.

Everyone at the Gateshead/Whickham School Sport Partnership wishes both Amy & Lee the best of luck with their ambassadorial roles this year.

Gateshead Paralympic Handover

A special event has taken place in Gateshead to mark the end of Team GB's most successful Paralympic Games, and launch a new sports initiative across the borough.
Gateshead/Whickham School Sport Partnership held its own Paralympic-style athletics competition at the English Institute for Sport at Gateshead International Stadium, to celebrate the official handover of the Games to London on Wednesday.

Gateshead International Stadium, one of the best-known international athletics venues in the UK, has been designated an official London 2012 Pre Games Training Camp along with Gateshead Leisure Centre.

Pupils from three of Gateshead's special schools, Dryden School, Hill Top School and The Cedars School, took part in a combination of track and field events including power slalom, the 60m sprint, a 4 x 60m relay, the shot putt and long jump.

The event signalled the beginning of The Secondary Special School Multi Sport Challenge, and Gateshead's special schools' first annual athletics tournament.

The new initiative will see specially trained sports coaches deliver a tailored programme of in-house activities to the borough's special schools, culminating in end-of-programme competitions. Schools will be awarded points from the results of each tournament counting towards a grand total at the end of the year. One lucky school will then be Secondary Special School Multi Sport Challenge chmapions for 2008/09.

Councillor Catherine Donovan, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: "This event was of great importance for Gateshead, not only because it marked the coming of the Paralympics to the UK, but because it will bring great benefits to our special school pupils.

"The Secondary Special School Multi Sport Challenge gives every pupil the opportunity to gain great skills, improve their well-being through taking part in sport, and most importantly, have fun."

To mark the handover of the Paralympic flag to London, where the Games will take place in 2012, event winner The Cedars School won the right to display a specially designed Multi Sport Challenge Flag within their school, which will be passed to subsequent Challenge participants.

This academic year, the programme will see pupils participate in a distance challenge, as well as indoor athletics, rowing and football.

Roll on London 2012, the future Paralympians are right here in Gateshead!
